Pay #470,000 and get new transformer within 2 weeks – IKEDC tells Maidan residents
The Manager of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC), Abule Egba Unit, Engineer Sunday Asha had admonished the people of Maidan Town to clear the debt of #470,000 on their faulty transformer in order for them (IKEDC) to energize their newly purchased transformers and to return the former one. Asha stated this in a meeting held between IKEDC and the residents of the town on 23rd of October, 2019 at the Baale’s palace.

His words: “I really appreciate the effort of the community by getting 2 transformers themselves, I can see the 2 transformers on my way here. But the debt on the former transformer have to be cleared before the new transformers can be energized. If you pay the remaining balance of #470,000 as agreed, I guarantee you that new transformer will be brought and energized. After that we can now work with you on how to energize the new transformers.”

Engineer Asha who also explained the process of energizing new transformer stated that the power to energize new transformer lies at the headquarter not business unit as he is a manager of a business unit.
In their reactions, some of the residents said they can only pay the debt, if they return the transformer adding that majority of the people have lost confidence and trust in community leaders over the issue of transformer. Other opined that they can pay and mobilize people to do same if they can get 100% assurance that they transformer will be returned within 2 weeks adding that IKEDC had failed them several times.
Recall that Maidan has been in blackout since December 2017 when their 300 KVA transformer developed fault and taken away by IKEDC since January 2018, which has not been returned as at the time of filling this report. The community has also taken bold steps by getting 2 transformers as the transformer taken away by IKEDC had cause chaos and division in the community.
